Easiest question in Section A

Which of the following best describes the function of a firewall:

A

To provide a gateway for the rest of the network

B

To disallow unwanted traffic into the network and allow wanted traffic

C

To allow users access to the Internet

D

To allow faster transfer of data between the Intranet and the Internet

E

Allow one type of network to connect to another type

Every student answered B.

Most difficult question in Section A

How does a node determine the MAC address of a node on another network:

A

It requests it with an ARP request

B

It does not need it as it uses the network address, and the MAC address of the gateway

C

It does a DNS lookup for the address

D

It sends out a request for the IP address of the node

E

It sends out a broadcast to all the connected networks

Most students thought that the answer was A, which is, of course, the correct answer for a local network, but not for an interconnected network.

Draft marks
published:

6pm, Sat 2 Feb 2002

Marking method:

Spreadsheet-based, automatically generated marking. The exam paper was marked using a strict marking schedule, which calculated marks automatically for Section A and Section B. Comments:

Section A
Students gained a single mark for a correct answer, zero marks (if there is such as thing) for a non-completion, and -0.25 marks for an incorrect answer.
Section B
Students were not penalised for an incorrect answer, and gained marks for an answer that was nearly correct (or made a reasonable attempt at the question). The rules for this were fixed for everyone.
Section C
This section contained two essay-type questions. It is difficult to create a standardized mechanistic marking schedule for this, but the questions were marked fairly using key essay points, and key pointers to good technical writing style (such as focused arguments, clear use of English, correct level of detail, and so on). Surprisingly this section contained the largest deviation in marks.

Student feedback :

[1]

Every student issued with the same printed material, have access to the same material on the WWW site, and have the same access to exam information. On-line testing used to gain experience in multiple-choice questions. Email updates sent outlining exam material.
